A phenomenological optical potential is constructed by computing a local approximation to it by means of dispersion relations. Its short-range, correlation part is also obtained from a generalized damping function without empirical parameters and the full result is finally applied, with considerable success, to positron scattering from atomic targets including the Ps formation channel.
