A technique for calculating the Casimir effect in the presence of spherical surfaces is presented. Unlike in earlier works, zeta-function regularization is used from the start and the properties of Bessel and related zeta-functions are central. New results concerning these functions are given and our examples of application fully agree with previous knowledge.
