The possible importance of a Hume-Rothery mechanism for understanding the stability of decagonal quasicrystals is discussed on the basis of self-consistent calculations of the electronic structure of higher-order approximants to decagonal and icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn alloys, as well as some related crystalline phases.
