A dilute magnetic fluid (MF) submitted to a static magnetic field exhibits an optical birefringence. In a vortical flow the optical axis of the MF is modified. A measurement of this magnetic birefringence and of the angular displacement of the optical axis is transformed into a non-intensive and sensitive measurement of the local vorticity of the flow.
