Strong anomalies in the Raman scattered intensity of an internal mode have been detected in the phase of C8 tolane. Based upon an orientational order parameter analysis, they are attributed to large tilt angle fluctuations by comparison with those encountered in the neighbouring smectic A and smectic phases.
