Intermittency of multiplicity distributions in proton-antiproton collisions and electron-positron annihilation is studied using the dimension invariance approach. It is shown that virtual states occur in these processes and that the corresponding effective fractal dimensions can be obtained using the multifractal analysis of the experimental data. The problem of dynamical and statistical fluctuations is also discussed in the context of the dimension invariance approach.
