We have applied the bond-valence method to calculate the valencies of the vanadium atoms in the low-temperature superstructure of -NaV2O5. The modulated ladders are found to comprise V4+ and V5+ cations in a zigzag type of charge order. The non-modulated ladders comprise a single type of vanadium atom in the mixed-valence state V4.5+.
