The neutron time-of-flight spectrum from the reaction was measured in order to study the
acceleration mechanisms in the atomic cascade of pionic hydrogen.
For the first time, discrete "high-energy"components up to
about 200
were found in hydrogen gas. The earlier findings
of discrete components in liquid hydrogen are confirmed in a
model-independent way, and for the first time, indications of
transitions with
are observed.
