Nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron
radiation from the 25.6 keV level of 161Dy is studied with two techniques:
nuclear forward scattering (NFS) and nuclear incoherent scattering (NIS). NFS
time spectra of Dy metal are measured at temperatures ranging from 15 K to
80 K. They reveal electron spin relaxation in ferromagnetic dysprosium with
long relaxation times of ns. NIS energy spectra of Dy2O3 at
room temperature are measured with meV resolution. Scattering accompanied by
phonon excitation is observed.
PACS: 76.80.+y – Mössbauer effect; other γ-ray spectroscopy / 72.25.Rb – Spin relaxation and scattering / 63.20.-e – Phonons in crystal lattices
