With the help of the pion medium effects, we investigate the finite-density nuclear system based on the non-linear chiral Lagrangian at leading order. At the mean-field level, an effective Lagrangian is constructed without including the usual scalar-isoscalar meson phenomenologically. It is shown that the chiral Lagrangian description of bulk nuclear matter is compatible with that from the Walecka-type mean-field models.
