I amend the concept of fractional exclusion statistics (FES) by introducing new conditions that make the formalism logically —and therefore physically— consistent. These conditions are imposed on the exclusion statistics parameters, defining how the parameters change if the species of particles in the system are divided into sub-species. Using a simple and intuitive model I deduce the general equations for the change of the exclusion statistics parameters at the redefinition of the particle species in any FES system.
