We find that the zero-order diffracted light without optical frequency shifts in the Raman-Nath regime is phase-modulated by the ultrasound wave. The finding gives us a chance to reveal the characteristics of ultrasonic modulation of coherent light. We reveal that the temporally periodic variations of ultrasound-modulated light intensity depend on and vary with the ultrasonic power. Additionally, the light intensity varies periodically along the ultrasound beam. Finally, the light intensity varies periodically at twice the ultrasonic frequency for the ultrasound wave of low power.
