Kirkwood's formula which enters, e.g., into calculation of the electrostatic free energy of a set of discrete point charges inside a sphere immersed in a solvent is derived rigorously for the first time in parallel with other similar formulae. An explicit connection between Kirkwood's polynomials and Bessel's functions is established. Besides, a one-parameter family of solutions which contains the classical situation as extreme point is introduced and discussed.
