By using an analytical expression for the static-structure factor of the interacting electron gas depending on the spin-polarization parameter ζ, we present a new method to calculate the correlation energy and the spin-susceptibility. For quasi–one-dimensional systems with wire-width parameter b we calculate the spin-susceptibility as a function of b and the Wigner-Seitz parameter , where N is the electron density and a* the effective Bohr radius. We discuss the Bloch instability in quantum wires and describe the spin-susceptibility near the Bloch instability.
