The dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy and of the bulk symmetry energy on density are studied in the relativistic mean-field theory for nuclear matter. The comparison between the results for the non-linear model and for the standard model shows the importance of the nuclear symmetry energy in understanding the properties of neutron-rich nuclei.
