A new perturbation method. Application to the Bénard-von Kármán instability in the subcritical regime

We report an experimental perturbation method to produce local spatio-temporal velocity perturbations. It has been successfully tested on the Bénard-von Kármán instability for a circular cylinder at subcritical Reynolds numbers . It is found to be useful in determining some physical properties of the instability.
