We study the statistics of turbulent velocity fluctuations in the neighbourhood of a strong large-scale vortex at large Reynolds number. At integral scale, the vortex dynamics can be either stable or unstable. We observe that at each distance from the vortex core, the velocity spectrum has a power law “inertial range” of scales and that intermittency is also present. The texture of turbulence is also influenced by the large-scale dynamics of the vortex: as measurements are made closer to the core the spectrum scaling exponents, the energy transfert rate (estimated via the third-order structure function) and the intermittency characteristics follow different evolutions in each regime.
