The novel compatibility of SQUID magnetometry with ultrahigh vacuum chambers allows for measuring the magnetic moment with submonolayer sensitivity of the same ultrathin film before and after capping with a protective layer. The contributions of the surface and the interface magnetic layers can be separated. We show that the Co surface atoms carry a moment of /atom enhanced by 32(5)% while the interface ones are reduced by to /atom compared to the bulk value of /atom. This surprisingly large difference between a vacuum facing Co surface and a Co/Cu interface is of fundamental importance.
