In the present work the observation of the photorefractive effect in a cell filled with nematic liquid crystal under electric-field application is reported. Photorefraction is caused by formation of a spatial inhomogeneous charge distribution due to the Helfrich-Carr effect in the absence of light-excited charge carriers.
