We investigate the electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic insulator combining photoemission measurements and various calculations. The results suggest that the charge transfer energy, , is unusually small, placing the bare upper Hubbard band within the oxygen p bandwidth, thereby implying that this compound is the first example of a correlated covalent insulator with a finite local moment.
PACS: 79.60.Bm – Photoemission and photoelectron spectra: clean metal, semiconductor, and insulator surfaces / 71.27.+a – Strongly correlated electron systems; heavy fermions / 71.28.+d – Narrow band systems; intermediate-valence solids
